Monsoon Arrives Early: IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alerts Across States
In an unexpected turn of events, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued early heavy rain alerts across multiple states, signaling the premature onset of the monsoon season. Traditionally, the southwest monsoon reaches Kerala by June 1, but this year, the IMD anticipates its arrival by May 27, marking the earliest onset since 2009.
Unusual Pre-Monsoon Activity
The IMD's forecasts indicate that the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into parts of the South Bay of Bengal, South Andaman Sea, and the Nicobar Islands within the next few days. This early progression is attributed to shifting weather patterns, which have led to unusually heavy pre-monsoon rains in several regions, including Pune, Goa, Bengaluru, and Guwahati.
